Engine linked as increases with engine speed... Sounds exactly like a tappet noise.... But it isn't... It's coming from the gearbox. Sometimes it goes away. It's there while driving or in park and increases as the engine revs... Can't hear it at idle.

When the engine is under load and vac is low, the line pressure in the trans will go up. This increases the holding power of the clutch packs, increases oil flow to the torque converter, and delays the shift.

Far as I remember, both governor and vacuum modulator are on the passenger side of transmission. Both control shift points/feel. Check your vacuum lines for rot, or cracks. Correct vacuum.
